The Community Library opened on 1st October 2011 following the decision by the Isle of Wight Council to implement cutbacks in the library service. Over the following 9 years plus the library operated with the help of Community Action Isle of Wight.
In 2020 the Library took on a full long-term lease of the library building, became fully independent of Community Action Isle of Wight and is now registered with the Charity Commission as charity 1179944.
We have a set of unpaid trustees who are responsible for the governance of the library. There is a voluntary management committee consisting of trustees and others who take care of the day to day operation of the library and the fundraising activities to secure the library’s day to day operation and its ongoing financial viability. In addition there are about 15 unpaid volunteers who regularly work at the library and it is because of their hard work and dedication that we have a library in Bembridge.
As we cannot charge for the majority of our services we are dependant on fundraising in order to maintain our ability to continue providing our services and maintain the fabric of our building. We welcome any and all contributions to assist us in keeping the Library open and providing a valuable service for Bembridge and its surrounding areas.
